Badass OC tips 1

I'm doing this one because there are 2 compliments I get a lot on Fimfiction

I'm really good at keeping everyone in character
And
My OC's while not completely three-dimensional, are pretty cool when it comes to this category
For an example of how to NOT make a character, we will be using an OC I made up on the spot "Darkblood Clawblade"

1. Assassins have honor codes

I don't know how to stress this enough, but let me just put it simply. Assassin/Mercenary characters are ALWAYS interesting when presented right. Because they break the idea that ruthless killing machines are ALWAYS bad guys. But the thing is, once "Darkblood Clawblade" kills a child or an unarmed civilian. You've just made him into a flat out asshole. Make him have the honor code of an assassin.

2. Even if your character IS a bad ass, give them a personality outside of badassery.

There is a story behind this one, I wrote a fanfiction called "Injection". The idea was to show the difference between a badass and a Gary Stu. Now, despite the main character being overly badass and being able to take down an Ursa Major from the inside by injecting poison into it's heart with a single regular sized syringe. People still enjoyed the character, why? Because not only was he shown to be able to be beaten in previous chapters, but he was shown to be a tragic character with a decent backstory.

Which brings me to the next tip.

3. If your character IS a badass. Show the reason why.

Allow me to point out another reason why people let my OCs overly-badassitude slide.
Because I showed WHY he was so damn cruel and violent. He saw the only friends he ever had killed before his very eyes and blamed himself for it.
A great example of an EXTREMELY cruel character that people enjoy is Kratos from God of War. Everybody's initial reaction to Kratos was that he felt no emotion and was just violent to be violent. It wasn't until his tragic backstory was revealed that he was revealed as an interesting character.

That was just a taste of what is to come for this blog depending on its success.
